Healing from betrayal is a process, not a destination. Initial progress is important, but so too is keeping up this progress. Once you begin to start gaining ground, it’s important to create routines for yourself to continue growing and moving forward beyond your pain. To keep yourself on track for continued healing and flourishing, use the following strategies.
1. Develop Daily Self-Care Practices
Continuing to make progress in your healing will be easier when you first prioritize yourself. It isn’t selfish to take care of yourself; it’s required! Establish daily routines to tend to the health of your mind, body, and spirit through activities such as mindfulness meditation, journaling or even just walking in nature on a regular basis. All of these activities provide you with a foundation on which to develop your emotional health.
2. Protect Your Peace by Setting Boundaries
You must protect your peace to keep growing. One of the ways to do that is by establishing boundaries with others, especially those who were part of your trauma. Establishing boundaries protects your emotional and mental well-being, provides you with control over who you let into your life, and how much access they have to you. If you have clear boundaries, you can continue to grow as a human being.
3. Build Supporting Connections
Surrounding yourself with people who will support your healing journey is very important. Healing is personal, but positive relationships can help you maintain your growth while going through the healing process. Having someone who supports and encourages you (no matter if it's a friend, mentor, or part of a group) will help you succeed on your healing journey; however, having toxic relationships will hinder your growth, so you need to make smart choices regarding your connections.
4. Stay Curious About Exploring Your Identity
Healing means discovering who you are other than your pain; however, discovery does not end there. Continue to explore your identity while you travel through your healing journey. Continuously explore by trying new activities, pursuing passions that you have set aside, and being curious about who you are as you grow and change. Discovering will help you continue to grow and find fulfillment in life.
5. Embrace a Mindset for Growth
Having a mindset for growth is essential for your ability to be resilient in life. A mindset for growth is the ability to learn, change, and adjust as things happen, and to improve yourself when you experience and deal with challenges. Instead of being afraid of what happens when you encounter a setback, think about what you can gain from that setback as a way to develop and become a stronger person. This will help you to deal with difficulties with courage and hope and allow you to continue to experience personal growth.
6. Find Continuous Support
Recovery from betrayal can be complicated and can take time to heal, and your continued growth is likely going to require you to have a source of support throughout this period. While you may only need to see a therapist/counselor during the early phases of your recovery, you should consider seeking the support of a therapist, coach, or mentor on a regular basis. By doing this, you will be able to obtain support and guidance that may enable you to move past what you have already experienced.
7. Acknowledge Your Achievements
You should also recognize the accomplishments that you are achieving as you continue to flourish and grow. Celebrating your achievements, whether they be small or large, will remind you of the number of positive changes you have made in your life. In addition to reminding you of the positive changes you have made in your life, acknowledging your accomplishments will encourage you to keep on growing and developing.
8. Remain in the Present but Prepare for the Future
Reaching flourishing takes both a balance between remaining in the present while also developing plans for future success. Staying present is vital; however, developing future objectives provides one more reason to maintain motivation. Develop some short and long-term objectives for growth, as they provide an incentive for you to pursue. When you have clear objectives ahead of you, you also have defined points of focus.
9. Express Gratitude Every Day
Gratitude is a huge support system for continued growth. Take a moment every day to examine everything you have to be grateful for. By doing so, it shifts your thoughts away from what you do not have to what you do have. Developing this habit will produce tremendous benefits to your mental and emotional well-being and will reinforce your flourishing process.
10. Continue to Make Healing a Priority
Your journey of healing is ongoing, and that is okay. You will sometimes encounter points from the past that were painful or possibly debilitating. However, when you utilize effective coping skills, you will handle them gracefully. You should continue to make healing a priority, even during times you feel strong, so you are ready to deal with anything life throws at you next.
Conclusion
To continue to grow, one must continue to do those things that have allowed one to achieve past successes, and at the same time, one must remain receptive to new experiences and new lessons. Growth and healing are both processes that we continue to go through, and through commitment and the correct frame of mind will keep us all growing and evolving into the future. Therefore, keep pushing ahead because you have earned this.
